きょうとえき	の	まえ。
kyōtoeki	no	mae.
In front of Kyōto Station?

ひらい：

わかりません	か。	じゃ、	いま	ちず	を	かきます。
wakarimasen	ka?	ja	ima	chizu	wo	kakimasu.
You don’t know? OK, then I’ll draw a map.

えき	は	ここ	です。
eki	wa	koko	desu.
The station is here.

リー：

	はい。
	hai.
	I see.

ひらい：

えき	の	となり	に	デパート	が	あります。
eki	no	tonari	ni	depāto	ga	arimasu.
There is a department store next to the station.

ゆうびんきょく	は	この	まえ	です。
yūbinkyoku	wa	kono	mae	desu.
The post office is in front of it.

リー：

ありがとう。	じゃ、	いってきます。
arigatō.	ja	ittekimasu.
Thank you. I’ll be off then.

ひらい：

	いってらっしゃい。

1． N１は　N2（place）に　あります／います

1) In this sentence pattern, the speaker picks up N1 as the topic, and explains where it is.
The topic should be something or someone that both the speaker and the listener know about.
The particle attached to N1 is not が, which marks the subject, but は, which marks the topic.

①	とうきょうディズニーランドは　ちばけんに　あります。 Tokyo Disneyland is in Chiba Prefecture.
②	ミラーさんは　じむしょに　います。 Mr. Miller is in the office.

2) When you ask where N1 is, this sentence pattern is used.

③	とうきょうディズニーランドは　どこに　ありますか。	Where is Tokyo Disneyland?
	…ちばけんに　あります。	…It’s in Chiba Prefecture.
④	いりがきさんは　どこに　いますか。	Where is Mr. Irigaki?
	…じむしつに　います。	…He is in the office.

[Note] です is sometimes used to replace a verb predicate when the predicate is obvious. The sentence
N1は N2 (place) にあります／います can be replaced by the sentence N1 は N2 (place) です.

⑤	とうきょうディズニーランドは　どこに　ありますか。 Where is Tokyo Disneyland?
	…ちばけんです。 …Chiba Prefecture.

2. Nですか

The particle か has the function to confirm. The speaker picks up a word or words he/she wants to confirm and confirms it (them) using this pattern.

⑥	きのくにやは　どこですか。 Where is Kinokuniya Store?
	…きのくにやですか。あの　ビルのなかです。 …Kinokuniya Store? It’s in that building.
